What does the Living Will consist of?
We put at your disposal a very simple form to leave your instructions on the care or treatments you want or do not receive and to appoint the representatives to act as interlocutors before the responsible medical team. This document can be made by a person of legal age, capable and free, and with the same freedom and requirements, its content can be revoked or modified. Keep in mind that if the patient cannot and there is no advance directive document, the relatives will intervene.

The living will in Aragón is called an advance directive document
The living will in Aragón is a document that contains the decisions expressed by a person, taken in a thoughtful, free and responsible way, about medical treatments and taking care of your health or, upon death, on the fate of your body or organs. This document serves so that in the event of physical or mental deterioration, a person who is unable to express her will, the health personnel involved in her care can know the will previously expressed so that they respect and comply with it.
In Aragón the living will can be done by anyone over 18 years old and who has the ability to act after a period of reflection where they can assess their life goals with loved ones, such as family and friends, and also with medical personnel. It is also possible that a person over 14 years old can process their living will, as long as they are assisted by their father, mother or legal guardian .
This document can be created by completing an available template, in paper or digital format. According to the regulations, the presence of two witnesses of legal age is required, of which at least one of them must not be related to the second degree or be related by property to the person to make a living will. This document can also be created in a notary, in which case witnesses are not necessary.
Sometimes, a representative is usually appointed who will be responsible for ensuring that the wishes reflected in the living will are fulfilled and respected at all times. If there are doubts about interpretation, the representative will be the valid interlocutor between the patient and the medical team and will make decisions on behalf of the patient, taking into account the patient’s values, instructions and wishes. Health professionals, when the circumstances arise, should consult the Registry of Advance Directives to find out if the patient has recorded their advance directives. The representative must accept her position by also signing the living will document.
In order to process the living will in Aragón it is necessary to provide the following documentation:
- DNI, NIE or Passport.
- The living will or advance directive document duly completed and signed.
- The original DNs, NIEs or Passports of the witnesses and / or representative, or a certified copy of them.
In Aragón, the living will or advance directives document can be presented in person or by post at the Registry of Advance Directives of the Department of Health, at the General Directorate of Rights and Guarantees of Users, whose address is Via Universitas 36, 4th floor (50017 – Zaragoza). You can also go to the User Care Services of the different specialty medical centers and hospitals of the Health System of Aragon, or any Health Center of the Health System of Aragon in Zaragoza, Huesca or Teruel. For face-to-face presentations it is necessary to request an appointment.

What regulations exist to regulate the Living Will in Aragón?
In the Comunidad Autónoma de Aragón, the living will, after regulation at the national level in 2002, is managed and processed based on a Decree published by the Government of Aragón in 2003.
