The living will in La Rioja is one in which a person expresses the instructions on the care and treatment of his health so that they are fulfilled at the moment when he is not able to express them personally. This document can be created by filling in an available template, in paper or digital format. According to the regulations, there are 3 modalities when it comes to processing the living will in the Basque Country and thus registering the prior instructions: by a notary, by three witnesses or by the person in charge of the registry office. In the case of witnesses, at least two of them may not have a kinship relationship up to 2nd degree with the grantor, or be linked by marriage or similar emotional relationship, or have a patrimonial relationship with him.
When processing the living will or prior instructions, it is very important to designate a representative to represent the patient and whose action will consist of enforcing what the grantor would have preferred in the event that he or she was in good condition. to express their decision, acting as an interlocutor before the responsible doctor or the health team.
In order to process the living will in La Rioja, it is necessary to provide the following documentation:

- Photocopies of the D.N.I. or passport of the participants: grantor, witnesses (if any) and representative (if any).
- If it is before a notary, in addition: a simple copy of the Prior Instructions Document.
- If it is before an official, in addition: original copy of the Prior Instructions Document.
